Message ME:
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer each of my questions fully. I am glad to have a better understanding of this task. The engine block that I sanded is completely broken down so there is no need to worry about debris. Whenever its reassembled the block and heads will get a through cleaning and all valves etc changed as you stated.

Can honing cylinder walls be something that can easily be messed up or is that considered a walk in the park for a typical machine shop?

MITCH:
Yes honing can be done rather crudely by many individuals and it entails the use of a tq plate to ensure the bores are honed concentrically and straight from top to bottom. Most shops won’t have a tq plate for a VG30.

ME:
And even though I would think its a bit more critical, is re-decking relatively simple and straight forward as well?

MITCH:
Decking the block and head surfaces while simple and easy to depict on what needs to be done…the physical act is a bit more labor intensive. Finding a surfacer that can be used, having the right adapter to bolt the head to the stand, indicating the head to ensure you are machining it flat and then finally figuring out how much to take off to ensure the head is completely true.

ME:
I dont approve of a lot of the work ethics or attention and care to detail that I see locally. There are a lot of shops but choosing the right one with the right guy can be risky if it exist at all. If I can get away with honing and decking I'll consider taking on this task myself.

MITCH:
In order to hone and deck a block & heads you would need a hone machine in utilizing a tq plate and a mill that is setup to tackle blocks and or cylinder heads to mill the deck surfaces. I don’t know your ability to use machines so I can’t say you are able or know how to or not but you definitely need both machines to accurately obtain tolerances needed.

NOTE: A torque plate is like a mock up of the cylinder head. They bolt it to the block and then the bock its honed with the plate on top. I read that it also simulates the slight distortion of the block once it torqued down so the hone can be as true as possible. Dont know if torque distortion is that much of a concern on a cast iron block compared to an aluminum one.
